I decided to work with Shakria Zhang, a Fine Art student from Chelsea. She’s my friend from foundation year, and honestly, her experience perfectly shows what I want to achieve in this project.
I first learned about her pain two and a half years ago. I did a Tarot reading for her about her relationship with her boyfriend back then. The cards showed she had to break up with him to get a fresh start. But at that time, she was quite vulnerable and couldn’t bring herself to leave. Fast forward to recently, we happened to chat about it again, and she told me she was so thankful for my reading. Even though it was super painful, she actually made up her mind to leave him. Seeing how much she has grown and changed after that relationship really inspired me.
I started thinking: what if I could help people with something more than just Tarot? As a sound artist, can I use sound to heal people? That’s how my first idea came up. We all have hidden fears inside us—some fear the dark, some fear blood, and some even fear themselves. For me, I struggle a lot with body shame, and Shak has a huge fear of being harmed. It made me realize that everyone has their own hidden fears that others can’t easily see. So, I want to start my project by exploring and expressing these personal fears.
The following paintings are some improvisations that themed Body and Blood.

I absolutely love the first painting because it shows a part of my own body. It’s not just about something scary, but it shifts to a third-person perspective—kind of like a horror movie—to express this feeling of the unknown and fear. When I talked to Shak about it, she said that when she was painting, she wanted to convey the terror that comes from a limited point of view. This really inspired me. A lot of times, fear actually comes from our own imagination of the unknown. We keep imagining things we don’t know about, and that’s how the fear grows bigger and bigger.Personally, I actually like the second painting better. Even though it doesn’t show any specific scary things or concrete fears, it creates a really weird, uneasy feeling of being surrounded by blood. But interestingly, Shak said she didn’t think this painting had any special meaning or deep emotions behind it.
