In this week’s study, I mainly gained three aspects of inspiration.
The first one is related to Foley and the sound that we are hearing. In terms of the Foley making process, we will always use distinctly different objects and props to create and reflect certain scenes. But how does this happen? Why will our ears believe the Foley artificial effect until we truly see the process of Foley creation? Taking the examples back in the class, we can easily think of the materials and the sound or atmosphere that the materials could make. It is not difficult for us to think about this. In my opinion, the reason can be counted down to two. The first reason is that when our eyes are dominant, we will ignore some details in the aural aspect, which can be seen mostly in the film or the sleep-helping video on YouTube. The second reason can be traced back to the sound itself. Different Foley sounds’ pitch, rhythm, texture, volume variations, and coordination help our ears identify these sounds. And I am deeply inspired by this, especially on how to make sound or how to design sound details that help our brain to recognize.
Secondly, sound is the best carrier of the fiction. It is not about the sci-fi, but the fiction itself, which the visual and eye cannot do or can barely make. Sound can convey fictional or even fake messages, while vision cannot. Lies are the best examples. Apart from this, sound can also be a good aid for our brain to experience and remember the fictional scene or imaginary places.
The last inspiration is the exercise in class, we were asked to create an auditory fiction map.
This is my first time that I have conceived a city by imagination, and I think it really helped by cutting the whole task into several small tasks. In the process of designing, I can note down some process of analysing or designing sound, like what the main texture and atmosphere are. And when the sound is developing or going, what variation can happen, or what challenge or unexpected aruption can happen?
