This week we went on an offsite visit called LINKED. We were asked to carry radio receivers to detect and listen to the distribution of the radio attached to the telegraph pole by the artist trying to imitate the sound of 400 people‘s daily lives even though they had already moved out a long time ago.

For me, the most interesting thing of this project is how the existing block post an impact to the extincted block. Along the way of finding the hidden radio, we could sometimes hear the noise of receiving unmeant radio from the existing block like the supermarket and McDonald’s. When hearing this meant and unmeant radio, I felt that the moved-out block is somehow still here as haunting. It became an inherent mark to this place, which is close to the artist’s purpose. What’s more, LINKED can also serve as a different and alternative map for the urban.

Having experienced this interactive sonic project, I now reckon that if I have a work that can represent the ambient or the atmosphere of something, I should combine the thing I want to represent and the surroundings together. However, I think I can do better in representing the ambient and life evidence of the moved-out block.
